Match Rules

1.0 DUES

  • 1.1 Dues shall be one hundred (100) dollars per team, and must accompany the entry submission. Dues shall be non-refundable.

2.0 TEAM CONSTITUENCY

  • 2.1 Each club shall submit entries for each team before the match season. These entries shall be received by the league Secretary no later than the date determined by the Executive Committee. The entry forms shall include range address and telephone number; full name, local and permanent addresses and nominal averages (see below) for all team members, and the Captain’s name with home and work telephone numbers.
  • 2.2 The nominal average shall be the most recent year’s average in league competition. For a shooter who has not competed before with this league, it shall be based on the score of three (3) tryout matches, or indoor NRA matches.
  • 2.3 If a club has more than one team entered in the league, it shall place its best shooters on the first team, next best on the second team, etc.; using the nominal averages provided to the league as the basis.
  • 2.4 The full name and address of any shooter not listed in the team entry before the start of the season shall be submitted to the Division Officer with the scores from the first match at which he fires. The current NRA Rules for team eligibility shall apply with the following interpretation: this league of NRA affiliated club teams fires a series of separate matches.
    In all divisions, the first two matches shall be fired for record only with the same team and the third and subsequent scores may count for team scores. If the club for whom the shooter fires has more than one team in the league, the shooter shall be placed on the appropriate team on the basis of the two record scores, unless the most recent year’s average in GBPL competition is higher; in which case the latter shall be used. If the score of an ineligible shooter is used for team score, the match will be forfeited by the team using it.
  • 2.5 A shooter may transfer from one team to another within the same club only once during the same season. He may always transfer upward to a higher team, but with only consent of both team Captains; and downward only if it is consistent with his average. Division Officers must be notified immediately.
  • 2.6 A club having more than one team entered in the league must maintain a minimum of six (6) shooters on all but its last team. To ensure that a team will finish the season, each team should start with seven (7).
  • 2.7 The sum of the four highest scores of the entire team members listed and firing will constitute the team score for that match. Team members shall be listed before firing commences. Additional names may be added to the list of shooters after the match starts, but these shooters scores must not count for team scores. (Amended 5/1999)
  • 2.8 Scores must be mailed to the Division Officer by both team Captains the same evening the match is fired.
  • 2.9 A shooter transferring from one club to another within the league will fire the remaining matches of the season for record only and must not be counted for team score. Division Officers must be notified immediately.

3.0 SCHEDULE

  • 3.1 Division of teams shall be made on the basis of the individual averages submitted by the clubs, using the sum of the four highest individuals as team average. In the event that the number of teams is not exactly divisible by the number of divisions, the first extra team shall be placed in the highest division, the next team in the next lower, and so on.
  • 3.2 Each team will fire three or more matches against each of the other teams in its division, with at least one match at its home range and at least one match at the opponents range. In the event that a member team has difficulty in making its range available for its home match, the match may be fired on the opponents range or a neutral range, if both team Captains agree.

4.0 RESCHEDULING

  • 4.1 Matches may be postponed by either team Captain, upon notification of the other. Postponement must be made no later than the evening preceding the night of the scheduled match, except in clear case of emergency.
  • 4.2 Postponed matches will be rescheduled at the convenience of both teams involved, but must be fired no later than two weeks after the date of the last scheduled league match. Postponed matches should be rescheduled at the time of postponement. The Division Officer shall be informed immediately of all postponements and the rescheduled dates.
  • 4.3 If the teams involved in a postponement cannot come to an agreement on a date for the rescheduling of a postponed match before the date of the last scheduled match of the league, the Division Officer shall set a date and notify the teams involved.

5.0 MATCH PROCEDURE

  • 5.1 There will be no informal practice after 8:00 p.m. on the night of the match. Unless waived by the shooters, each relay will commence within five (5) minutes of practice.
  • 5.2 Relays will follow each other with a maximum of five (5) minutes between. Each team must have at least three (3) members present by 8:30 p.m. Each relay will include at least one (1) member from each opposing team. The score of any shooter firing after the last relay will not count for team score.
  • 5.3 Each shooter will be supplied with four (4) targets by the home team. The name of the shooter and the stage of fire will be written on the back of the target. No marking of any kind is to be made on the front of the target. The stage is to be verified by the two range officers after firing. There shall be no mutilations of any kind.
  • 5.4 The use of turning targets shall be allowed in a match only if both team Captains agree to there use.
  • 5.5 In the event of multiple matches, the home team Captains will determine the firing schedule.

6.0 ALIBI HANDLING PROCEDURE

  • 6.1 Competitors who have an alibi will not release control of the pistol, but simply place it at rest facing down range, and raise their other arm.
  • 6.2 The Range Officer (or duly authorized representative) will observe the alibi.
  • 6.3 In the event of an obvious malfunction, authorization to clear the pistol will be given to the competitor under the Range Officers supervision.
  • 6.4 In the event of an unobservable alibi, the Range Officer may assume control of the pistol, aim it down range, and squeeze the trigger, or instruct the competitor to do so.
  • 6.5 This accomplished, authorization to clear the pistol will be given to the competitor under the Range Officers supervision as in Section 3.
  • 6.6 In most instances, it is neither necessary nor desirable for the Range Officer to handle the pistol and under no circumstances should a Range Officer handle a pistol with which he is not familiar with the mechanical controls.
  • 6.7 In unusual circumstances, should the need arise to handle the pistol, the Range Officer will not make any mechanical alterations or adjustments to the pistol without notifying the competitor. Failure to do so will constitute a range alibi.

7.0 SCORING, DISPUTE, PROTEST

  • 7.1 Prior to the match team Captains shall appoint one or more scorers, who shall score all the targets for that match on behalf of their team. If the scorers cannot agree on the score of a target, it shall be submitted to the team Captains for scoring without disclosing the identity of the shooter or the team. The decision of the team Captains will be final. No targets shall be rescored after they are scored, checked, and recorded. No changes will be made on the score sheet unless approved by both team representatives, except in the event of a mistake in mathematics on the score sheet.
  • 7.2 A team that does not comply with league rules shall suffer such a penalty as may be determined by the Executive Committee. The Captain of the aggrieved team will notify the Executive Officer and the Division Officer in writing by the second day after the match is scheduled, giving all the pertinent details, and listing the members of each team present. The team against whom the grievance is claimed will immediately be given the opportunity to defend itself in writing and will do so within two (2) days of receiving notification by the Division Officer.

8.0 FINAL STANDINGS

  • 8.1 Final team standings will be based on wins and losses. In the event of a tie, the winning team will be the team with the highest team average.

9.0 AWARDS

  • 9.1 Individual shooters must participate in at least 75% of the matches to qualify for any individual award. If the match is fired, they must fire; whereas recorded attendance is sufficient for forfeited matches. Individual competitors will not be eligible for more than one award in any one season.
  • 9.2 An award winning team may purchase, through the Treasurer additional (duplicate) awards in excess of the individual awards authorized by the league, provided the team concerned pays in advance for such additional awards.
  • 9.3 The ten shooters with the highest season averages shall be named to the Greater Boston Pistol League All Star Team and receive a special individual award. Rule 9.1 applies with regard to eligibility for this recognition.

10.0 COOPERATION

  • 10.1 The spirit and not necessarily the letter of these rules shall prevail. In the interest of good sportsmanship and support of the shooting sports, it is to be expected that all individuals and teams shall cooperate with each other and the league.
